Return to Kurdistan
The Kurds are the world’s largest ethnic group without a nation of their own. These documentaries produced for the BBC World Service offer a personal look at the tragedies -- and hope -- of life in Kurdish areas of Northern Iraq.
First Half

International journalist Michael Goldfarb was deeply touched by those he met while reporting from Kurdish areas of Iraq five years ago. Goldfarb befriended a Kurdish man who worked as his translator. Ahmad Shawkat was eventually murdered because of his political beliefs. In this BBC documentary, Michael Goldfarb paints a picture of Iraqi life as seen through Shawkat’s eyes; and the eyes of his family who now live without him.

Second Half

The Kurds have their own autonomous government in Northern Iraq. Michael Goldfarb looks at the changes in what was once the poorest region of the country and is now the richest. He also goes to Kirkuk, the disputed heart of northern Iraq's oil industry.
