The Atrocity Archives
Detailed files of atrocities committed during Guatemala's long civil war are now being released. Some welcome this as part of their healing process; others do not. Gerry Northam reports from Guatemala City on the Atrocity Archives.

FIRST HALF

Guatemala’s 36-year-long civil war ended in 1996. Four years ago, 80 million documents were discovered in an abandoned warehouse. These fragile pieces of paper contain evidence of police involvement in tens of thousands of kidnappings, forced disappearances, and extra-judicial killings. These documents are being painstakingly restored, and the first batch has just been made public.

SECOND HALF

Gerry Northam continues this documentary produced for the BBC World Service by looking at the debate over whether exhuming Guatemala’s past can lead to reconciliation.
