  El Sistema Goes Global    
El Sistema is a remarkable program that started more than three decades ago in a parking garage in Caracas, Venezuela, which uses ensemble music education to change kids’ lives and transform communities. We look at how El Sistema works in Venezuela, and at programs it’s spawned in Scotland and Brooklyn, NY.

  
FIRST HALF


El Sistema now teaches music to more than 300,000 of Venezuela's poorest children, who practice for hours each day. These kids learn self-esteem, and discipline. They find a way out of gangs and off of the streets. The BBC's Juan Carlos Jaramillo examines key elements of El Sistema’s formula, and how it brings social change through music.
SECOND HALF


El Sistema has been so successful that it's spawned similar programs throughout the world. Juan Carlos Jaramillo looks at the challenges of adopting El Sistema’s methodology in other cultures.
