The Greening of the Deserts
Many scenarios of global warming in Africa include more drought and land degradation. But some scientists now argue that some deserts – including the Sahara, one of the most arid areas on earth - could in fact ultimately get greener and experience more rainfall.
FIRST HALF

In this documentary produced for the BBC World Service, Ayisha Yahya looks at the arguments that climate change could lead to more rainfall in certain deserts. She also examines the implications of this for traditional nomadic desert communities such as the Tuareg of northern Mali.

SECOND HALF

In Egypt, scientists are experimenting with high-tech techniques to make the desert bloom. Ayisha Yahaya investigates whether or not these plans are sustainable.

Click here to listen to another of the documentaries in this series. Ayisha Yahya visits the Desert Research Station in Namibia and reports on efforts to increase available water in arid areas such as Namibia.
