In March, 1980, El Salvador's populist Archbishop, Oscar Romero, was shot dead as he celebrated Mass. A UN sponsored truth commission later concluded that Romero's assassination was carried out by a right-wing death squad. The legacy of Oscar Romero, and the appeal of his message, have continued to spread throughout El Salvador since his death -- despite attempts to squash them.
